Located in Birendranagar, Surkhet Deuti Bajai Temple is a national heritage site and is visited by people from near and far every day. Historically, only people belonging to the Raji society used to pray in this temple. However, nowadays, people of all castes and religions come to pray. The shrine of Deuti Bajai was constructed by King Yash Malla in the 18th century. The temple was destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1980 B.S. and is currently being reconstructed. The government and municipality are trying to develop and renovate the temple to attract more visitors. Archaeologists have theorized that the temple was demolished sometime in the 16th century by the followers of Shankaracharya in a bid to stop the spread of Buddhism.
